In Cambodia today, there are approximately 4 million people who lack access to safe water, most of whom live in rural areas of Cambodia. In addition to the 4 million, 6 million more lack access to improved sanitation. Although Cambodia has one the fastest growing economies in Asia and a booming tourist industry, the social and public programs in place do not adequately support the needs of those living outside the major cities. Political unrest and inadequate government leadership has greatly stifled the country’s ability to rebuild what was lost and destroyed during the civil war. As a result, many are forced to live without vital necessities such as water for consumption and proper sanitation.
Though plans are in place by public agencies in Cambodia to address the water crisis, not much progress has been made and millions are forced to live without the vital necessity of water for consumption and proper sanitation. Years have gone by and yet they continue to wait with uncertainty.
